is among the lives we save when we use drones are those of troops who otherwise would be going into harm's way. >> absolutely. i lived in beirut when jesse jackson had to hold his nose and go to damascus to beg for the release of an american pilot who had been shot down by the syrians. drones are clearly the wave of the future because they save american lives but they're also effective for surveillance. they have far greater use than simply the kind of fighters we've used, and we actually also use them for domestic purposes. they were reportedly used in the case of the 5-year-old who was held in alabama. they have been used for weather. there are an estimated 8,000 drones so although it's part of the most secret program, military program, we have, there are also other uses. >> which starts to frighten folks domestically 37 good thing with the outcome of that alabama case but some folks think their civil liberties are about to be infringed upon at home. dan, i know from your reporting and the book you wrote there, was more debate within this administration about the transparency aspect of

reporting of certain activity in the air above the scene of what was happening. can you tell us about that? >> reporter: sure. well, there was aerial surveillance going on. now, these negotiators have been on the scene since last week. we know the fbi took over the investigation last week, and we know that they've been trying to figure out kind of the layout of dykes' property. now, the aerial surveillance, when an fbi team comes in like this, they obviously have different methods that they use to get a clearer picture of what exactly is going on. we were able to confirm with a federal law enforcement official that the small aerial aircraft that we've been seeing kind of circling the property in the morning, that that was a surveillance aircraft. so that's what we've been seeing the last few days, and again police have been very tight-lipped and haven't said exactly what they have been finding or what the location -- or what the layout of dykes' property has been. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. sorry -- you need to stay there, sorry, gabe. i wanted to ask you one more question conce
